Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment usually costs less and is less invasive than taking the damaged tooth out and replacing it with a bridge or an implant. Even in difficult cases, root canal treatment is worth attempting. So before you decide on an extraction, which cannot be undone, check whether the tooth can still be saved. Ask your dentist!

Root canal treatment

We also treat teeth with several canals. The price depends on the number of canals; you will find it in our price list.

What does root canal treatment involve?

Root canal treatment, also called endodontics, treats infection of the pulp inside a tooth. The infection may follow bacteria getting into the tooth, a leaking filling, an injury such as a fall, or a wedge-shaped notch at the neck of the tooth. Ignore the problem and the tooth may have to come out.

Inside the tooth, under the enamel and a hard layer called dentine, lies a soft tissue known as the pulp. It holds the blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue that help the tooth to develop. A fully formed tooth can survive without its pulp, because the tissues around it keep it supplied. During root canal treatment the dentist therefore removes the diseased or damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the space inside the tooth, then places a solution in it that stops bacteria multiplying. Once the space has been cleaned thoroughly and dried, the dentist fills it with a special material and closes the opening in the tooth with a temporary filling. Treatment ends with a permanent crown or a similar restoration on the tooth. Porcelain inlays and onlays are becoming more popular.

More information

Root canal treatment today is nothing like the old methods that many patients still fear. It is much like having a routine filling. The treatment is relatively painless, and the treated tooth goes back to biting and chewing. How long it lasts depends on how much healthy tissue is left and on whether we protect it with a restoration.

When a tooth still hurts after treatment, or the canals run in an unusual way, we take a CBCT 3D scan. It often shows a cause that an ordinary radiograph misses.
